First light

At first light, darkness fell. As usual. Today would be no different and the feeling it would instill in Sophie would also be no different.
Sophie was ready, sitting at the window of her pod on the 45th floor, her eyes fixed on the horizon, waiting. And there it was, a slight hint of paleness from afar. A glowing haze was beginning to take form on the surface of the water and then the menisc of the huge disc appeared, spreading a delicious light which tickled the waves. Sophie tried not to blink, staring intensely at the scene unfolding before her. 'Blink and you'll miss it!" her mother had said to her growing up. That was before the Complexes. 'For safety' the government had said. Sophie was drinking in the light. The windows of the Complex were automatically timed to display an alternative scene whereby the sunrise would continue like a film. Sophie had learnt robotics from her father, enabling her to short circuit her one window without setting off the alarm.
And then it was gone. Darkness fell once more, an impenetrable curtain of black. Sophie had been taught at school, alongside her classmates, that a long long time ago the world outside had had full days, hours and hours of light. That was until the Big Hit. The moon had gone off orbit and smashed into the side of the earth. The repercussions on humanity had been devastating. That was old history. People knew no different, going through life in the Complex with its fake blue sky and fake sunlight getting fake tans. Fake. Not real. Is this life real? Sophie sighs and refixes the blind across the window before the alarm can sound.

Tanios, stands on the beach. The light in the window of the Complex, a mere pinprick, a star is there again. He can hear waves, smell the seaweed, feel the grains of sand between his toes, his senses tingling. He can See. He senses his son appproach, running. "I Saw a crab. First, I Sensed it then I Saw it." says Kris. "Your Adjustment is coming along nicely." says his father and ruffles hair. They walk hand in hand over the dune into the darkness towards their tribe.
